«THE TOGHU FESTIVAL»

The Ministry of Arts and Culture has as mission, the elaboration and the implementation of government policy in the area of culture. This involves the safeguarding, conservation, promotion and vulgarization of our cultural heritage; the cultural heritage of the four cultural areas of Cameroon. This includes culture in all its forms; costumes, culinary arts, dances, artefacts, rites and traditional practices etc. the Atoghu and Ndop fabrics from the grassfield cultural areas have been promoted on the international scenes for years now and at the national level, these fabrics are equally being celebrated.
The North West region witnessed the 2nd edition of the Atoghu festival on 26 and 27th April 2025 organised by the North West Fashion designers’ association.
The Festival which was presided by the Representative of the Governor of the North West Region in the company of the Regional delegate for arts and culture, had as theme «ONE BRAND, ONE PEOPLE, PRIDE OF THE GRASSFIELD».
This festival had in its menu a caravan match, exhibitions of different models of attires made out of the Toghu fabric, artistic performances and a seminar. The seminar was on the preservation and documentation of Atoghu. The key message was to sensitize the participants and Cameroon as a whole on the importance of this heritage product that is attracting a lot of interest in the entire world, how it can be preserved, transmitted to the younger generation and enhance a greater visibility.
This is very important especially with the listing of cultural heritages on the prestigious representative list of cultural intangible or tangible heritage of humanity. Documentation, a clear means of preservation and transmission to the next generation are usually a major favorable factors.
The “Atoghu” (also spelled “Toghu”) is a distinctive Cameroonian traditional attire, particularly associated with the Northwest region. It’s a colorful, intricately embroidered outfit, often made with a heavy black velvet base and red and white patterns. Won by the royal class in the past, still associated with important occasions, the Atoghu is a symbol of status, wealth, and power. It is a key part of Cameroon’s cultural identity.

Other attires from other cultural areas were also being exhibited to project national unity and harmonious living together.
